‘You came to take us/All things go, all things go/To recreate us/All things grow, all things grow’
While binge-ing the frenetic and excellent The Bear – about a chef struggling to revive (and survive) his family’s restaurant – I was re-introduced to a a batch of excellent songs from past decades. On a soundtrack that features the likes of Wilco, LCD Soundsystem, and Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens’ tender and disarming Chicago is a standout. The music of this Michigan-raised singer-songwriter is a bit of an acquired taste, but once smitten, you’re in for a treat. Chicago is just one of many first-rate tracks on 2005’s full-length Illinoise.
