Jackie Down The Line – Fontaines D.C.
Beef up your 'mixtapes' with this growing collection of overlooked songs, old and new. One track, up to three times a week. Don’t forget to join in on the conversation, too.
‘I don't think we'd rhyme/I will wear you down in time/I will hurt you, I'll desert you/I am Jackie down the line’
I hadn’t planned to feature Fontaines D.C. again so soon. But why not? The first single off the upcoming new album is nestled in my head, banging around, even as I skate down the ice in beer league hockey. For me, it’s the best song of 2022 so far. And as we listen to this band, we’re learnin’ some Irish. The song apparently relates to the Irish slang “Jackeen”, pejorative slang for a Dubliner (likely inspired by the city’s historical links to England and the Union Jack). And it’s from the upcoming new album Skinty Fia, an Irish phrase for the extinct Irish elk or “giant deer”. The full-length drops April 22.
