‘Now I don't know the first thing about football/But my instincts tell me this is my windfall’
As my son and his friends, legally old enough to bet on the World Cup, dip their toes in those waters, I can’t help but hope they don’t fall in up to their necks. Their measly incomes can’t absorb the potential losses. So I'm pointing them to this frenetic and hilarious little song from The Streets’ otherworldly 2004 album A Grand Don’t Come For Free. The track, and this album, are all about investing in the ride, listening to English rapper Mike Skinner’s songs in sequence – it tells a story that starts with a mysterious loss of cash – and checking the lyrics online to navigate the slangy slaw that makes this record such a treat.
